Handler's ability to write stories came into play at the age of 21. Handler then decided to make a full-time commitment to stand up comedy. Handler began her professional career being a part of the female-only Oxygen team, and was a part of a television show called Girls Behaving Badly. The series was famous for its secret camera and humorous jokes. This show aired from 2002 to 2005. The host then appeared on other TV shows such as Weekends at the D.L., The Bernie Mac Show, The Practice and My Wife and Kids. Handler appeared on The Tonight Show for a time as a reporter. In 2010, she announced that she would host at the 2009 MTV Video Music Awards. She became the first female host in the same category as Roseanne.
